Teaching Your Dog Their Name

Writer's picture: Kevin DugganKevin Duggan

Whether you’re naming your puppy or changing the name of a newly adopted dog, one thing to consider is that saying the name over and over will likely go in one ear and out the other. A dog’s name is generally used to get their attention. Here is a good way to start:

A few times per day, walk up to your dog, say their name and then give a few treats. When done correctly, your dog will hear that word (the name) and start getting excited about it. To do this correctly, catch your dog off guard with this. Be sneaky about grabbing the treats so they’re not already thinking that something is going to happen. Then walk up, happily say the name while they’re not overly distracted and treat.

In general you’ll want to avoid using your dog’s name in any sort of corrective way. Meaning, don’t say, “Fido! Bad boy!” This will lead to a dog developing a negative association with their name and will likely lead to them avoiding you when you say it.
