Long Leashes Are Amazing (and Life Saving)

Did you know that you can purchase a long “training lead” for pretty cheap? You can get a 50 foot leash for about $10. Many people either use a short leash or try to go right to off leash, but don’t know there is an in-between option.
Long training leashes are a must for anyone that wants to allow their dog to roam right away or has a desire to have their dog off leash one day. Where it’s safe, a long leash allows a dog to cover much more ground to explore. This provides nice enrichment. It’s also great for coming when called practice!
My favorite part about using a long leash is that it gives my dog a lot of room to explore but it helps ensure he is safe. I always start off by holding on to the other end of the leash. Once he is coming when called reliably and sticking pretty close, I graduate him to dragging the leash. Once you get to the “dragging the leash” phase, it’s pretty much like being off leash.
